Grade 3
Language Arts
Students continue to
work on basic punctuation and sentence structure. They will learn to
use adjectives and use both regular past tense verbs (-ed) and
irregular past tense verbs. They use of adverbs and the correct use of
the apostrophe will be introduced.
Students will begin to
learn how to write both upper and lower case letters in cursive.
Mathematics
Students will be
introduced to two-dimensional plane shapes and three-dimensional
figures and their properties. Students will continue to practice
addition and subtraction of three-digit number. They will discover the
link between repeated addition an multiplication. They will learn
multiplication facts from 1 to 10 and be able to do simple one-digit
multiplication. Students will learn to divide by two, three, and four.
Emphasis will also be placed on mathematical problem –solving.
Science
In science students
will study the need of plants and animals. They will also study parts
of animals and different kinds of animals. They will study where
plants and animals live and how plants and animals live together in an
ecosystem. Students will learn about minerals, rocks, and soils. They
will also learn about changes that occur on land. They will learn
about motion and speed and forces. They also learn about levers and
pulleys and other simple machines.
Grade 4
Language Arts
Students will be able
to differentiate between the subject and predicate in a sentence. They
will learn about subject and possessive pronouns. They will review
verb tenses and study linking/helping verbs. Grade 4 should be
independent readers. Students will be expected to use cursive
handwriting fro all assignments.
Mathematics
Students will
understand place value and be able to work with numbers up to 10,000.
They will be able to add, subtract, estimate and round using 4-digit
numbers. They will be able to multiply using two digit numbers and
divide by one digit numbers. Division by two digit numbers will be
introduced. Students should also be able to multiply using 10,000
recognizing patterns. Students will be expected to know
the multiplication tables 2 -10. Students will be able to use and
interpret simple graphs and plot coordinates on a grade. Students will
learn how to add and subtract fractions with like an d unlike
denominators and explore the use of decimals. Problem solving will be
emphasized with each topic.
Science
In Science students
will learn how to classify organisms. They will also learn about the
various characteristics of animals. They will discover what you can
learn from rocks and the shaping of the Earth’s surface. They will
study the water cycle and weather. They will also study about heat,
light, and sound.
Grade 5
Language Arts
In Language Arts,
students will learn to use compound sentences and conjunctions. They
will learn how to use quotation marks correctly. They will be able to
classify pronouns, use the definite and indefinite article and
comparative adjectives. In comprehension they will be able to infer
and deduce from clued given in a passage. They will continue to
refine their creative writing skills, using cursive writing for all
assignments. Grade 5 students should able to read independently.
Mathematics
Students will work
with numbers of 5 digits. They will order, compare and estimate whole
numbers. They will add and subtract decimals up to 100th.
Students should be able to recite all multiplication tables from 2 to
10. They review 2D and 3D shapes and their properties. They will study
metric, measurement: perimeter, area and volume. They will practice
long division.
Science
In science students
will study classifying living things. They will also study the parts
of plants and the importance of plants. They will learn about plant
and animal adaptations. They will examine how living things interact
in their environments. They will study the properties of matter and
energy. They will also study elements, compounds, mixtures and
solutions. They will learn about motion, sound and light.
