COURSE DESCRIPTION:  Students will study all aspects of English Language Arts including, vocabulary, language skills, grammar, writing, reading and comprehension. This study will help to increase their proficiency in speaking, listening, writing and reading interpretation. Students will be exposed to a variety of mediums and genres of reading and writing. Short stories and novels will be read. The six steps of the writing process will be taught and assessed through the 6+1 traits. Written, oral and multimedia assignments will be given.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course is designed to expand the student’s mathematical skills through problem-solving activities, mathematical reasoning and the use of mathematical concepts in every day situations.  Specific topics covered are number theories, place value, decimals, fractions, ratio and proportion, percentage, probability, area, perimeter, volume, and graphs.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course utilizes a structured balance of content and hands-on activities that explore Matter and Energy, Electricity and Magnetism, the Diversity of Living Things and The Changing Earth.  Students must not only know various scientific facts, but must also explore the world around them, thus gaining a firm grasp between the abstract and tangible. This course also demands that the student observes, infers, relates, categorizes, communicates and compares what is learned in order to solidify the scientific concepts relayed to the student.  Assessments are a combination of performance based and constructed response.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  The Physical Education program provides the opportunity for the student to develop and maintain his or her level of fitness and also develop a variety of sport specific skills.  There will be opportunities provided for the development of self-control, self-direction and desirable sportsmanship.  The following topics are included in the course:  basketball, soccer, volleyball, gymnastics, track and field, swimming, hockey, handball, badminton, tennis, recreational games and physical fitness.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course is designed to introduce technical skills, manual ability, visual concepts and creative thinking.  The art program will develop techniques used for drawing, painting, printmaking and three-dimensional work.  A variety of media will be included:  pastel, watercolor, oil paint, tempera, color pencils, crayons, markers, ink, collage, clay and cardboard.  Additionally, the student will explore some crafts such as glass painting, paper mache, fabric paint, ceramics or weaving.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will build on existing computer skills by reviewing computer basics and terminology.  Students will be introduced to ethics and etiquette in the technology learning environment. They will demonstrate appropriate keyboarding skills including predetermined keyboarding speed and accuracy. Students will also produce various documents and computer projects using word processing.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  Throughout this course, students will be exposed to creative musical activities including learning how to read musical notation. This course will introduce the musical concepts of pitch, rhythm, texture, melody, and form.  Students will be introduced to singing and playing the keyboard.  Cooperative group work, listening, and ensemble skills are emphasized.

Arabic Language Arts

Islamic Studies

وصف للمنهاج: يخضع منهاج التربية الإسلامية لإشراف وزارة التربية والتعليم بدولة الكويت بمعدل ثلاث حصص أسبوعيا ويهدف إلى خلق الوازع الديني في نفس الطالب والعمل على تقويم سلوكه بما ينسجم مع القيم الإسلامية و الإنسانية من خلال عدة مفاهيم مثل( التوحيد أساس العقيدة، الإنسان في الإسلام محور هذا الكون ، الحلال و الحرام تشريع الهي، و العبادة طاعة لله وتنفيذ لأوامره ، والعبادة تطهير للنفس وإيقاظ للضمير وضابط للسلوك ،و المؤمن القوي خير وأحب إلى الله من المؤمن الضعيف، المؤمن تحكم تصرفاته قيم الإسلام) كما يهدف المنهج إلى تنمية مهارات التلاوة لدى التلاميذ و الاهتمام بحفظ القرآن الكريم .

Arabic Social Studies

وصف للمنهاج:يخضع منهج الدراسات الاجتماعية لإشراف وزارة التربية و التعليم

ويتضمن الكتاب المدرسي دراسة شاملة لدولة الكويت من الناحية الطبيعية و علاقتها الجيولوجية بشبه الجزيرة العربية ،وكذلك الخصائص المناخية لدولة الكويت و العوامل المؤثرة في مناخها.  ثم ننتقل لدراسة الحياة الحيوانية والنباتية ثم نشأة الكويت وازدهارها وكذلك دراسة بعض المشكلات الاجتماعية مثل العمالة المنزلية ثم دراسة عن النفط في دولة الكويت.

ويتضمن الكتاب المدرسي دراسة شاملة للخصائص الجغرافية للوطن العربي من حيث التضاريس و المناخ و الغطاء النباتي ثم السكان في الوطن العربي من حيث أصولهم العرقية وهجرتهم ،و الموارد الطبيعية و النشاط السكاني ،ثم الحضارات القديمة التي نشأت في الوطن العربي، كما يتم التعرض لدراسة مشكلة المياه في الوطن العربي ، و الثقافة العربية و التحديات التي تواجهها ، أيضا يتم لتعرض لدراسة الصراع العربي الإسرائيلي ، ثم ينتهي بالتكامل و التضامن العربي وسيلة فعالة في مواجهة المتغيرات السياسية و التكتلات الاقتصادية.

English Language Arts

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  The course will expand the student's knowledge base and skills in English vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing, and conversation.  Literature is used as a source of ideas for writing, inquiry, self discovery, and research.  Students will reflect on both modern and classical literature.  The reading list includes the novels Frankenstein, From the Desert to Detroit and a variety of short stories and poetry.  Different genres of reading and writing will be explored.  Both reading and writing will be used to activate creative and critical thinking.  Students will develop their own sense of style and voice when writing and responding to literature.  The 6+1 traits of writing will be used as an assessment tool.

Extended research projects are also required, including multi-media presentations.

Mathematics

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  Algebra I introduces fundamental topics of algebra. The course is designed to provide practice developing essential skills and have students apply those skills to a variety of realistic problems. Algebra I concentrates on algebraic concepts such as: linear relationships, linear inequalities, systems of linear equations, powers and exponents, quadratic equations, polynomials and factoring, proportions and rational equations, and functions.  Problem solving skills are emphasized throughout the course.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  Geometry focuses on the proof and application of theorems involving geometric topics. This course concentrates on concepts such as: reasoning (deductive and inductive), lines, triangles, polygons, transformations, circles, planar and spatial measurements, and loci.  Also included is a review of basic algebra skills and problems with connection to real life situations.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  Algebra II develops further the major concepts learned in Algebra I and Geometry such as: linear equations, systems of linear equations, and inequalities. Application of algebraic skills in a variety of problem-solving situations is included. The course is appropriate for students who have a solid foundation in Algebra I.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course is designed for students of above-average mathematical ability who plan to pursue mathematically related subjects in college or university. It is also a prerequisite course for students who plan to take calculus in their senior year. The program provides a strong foundation in the concepts, techniques, and applications of pre-Calculus in order to prepare students for more advanced work. Course topics include functions, inequalities, exponents and logarithms, conic sections, trigonometry, and sequences and series.

Science

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course has a dual purpose: to provide a challenging, in-depth study of living organisms for the average college bound student and to provide an extensive foundation for those students who will choose to pursue advanced biology courses. The course will include units of study on: the nature of life, basic biochemistry, cell structure and function, cell respiration, photosynthesis, cell division, protein synthesis, genetics and inheritance. Various biological systems will be explored in depth, stressing comparisons between simple and complex organisms, while concentrating on human systems.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course is intended to challenge students to think about chemistry as a major career choice and gives constant relevant work geared toward showing the importance of oil and its meaning to the Kuwait economy. It starts from the basics of matter and present atomic theory, working on the study of chemistry as the study of pure substances, going into depth about elements and compounds. The course discusses how Man can change the properties of substances to make new substances useful for industry, retail and commercial applications. It aims to give an in-depth understanding of bonding, chemical reactions and laboratory techniques and expects students to be studying on a regular basis having an expected assessment each week to help pace students through the study of a subject.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  Physics is considered a challenge to most students and with good reason. However this course aims to simplify and demystify basic physical phenomena and place it into a useable, understandable context. This is not calculus based and uses simple language intermingled with basic mathematic formula to explain complex physical occurrences. Physics explains how to predict future scientific events through the use of physical formulae and integrates concepts learned during middle school to show relevance. The emphasis is to show the significance of physics to prospective future engineers and related careers by showing how it can be applied to a huge variety of areas in civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical and IT engineering.

Humanities

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  The World Geography curriculum is devoted to the development of the high school student for the modern world. The global and political situations provide the springboard for student involvement. Throughout this topic, geographical skills and map interpretations are important. In Physical Geography the emphasis is placed on the impact and importance of water, winds and oceans, hurricanes, primary and secondary landforms, climate, vegetation and resources. Regional Geography is concerned with Africa as a continent and the 5 main regions. The physical geography, history and culture, economy and future developments of these regions are studied.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  Students will investigate significant events in and assess characteristics of Traditional Civilizations, Medieval Europe, Rise of the West, European Domination and the Twentieth Century. The main topics here are the Renaissance, Reformation, Exploration, Changing ways of Life, New Ideas, French Revolution and Cultural Revolution. Central throughout these themes are the causes and effects of these events.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course is devoted to the Introduction of Economics Principles, Functions and important Institutions. The global and political situations are used to provide students with an opportunity to become involved, and to understand world issues and current world problems. Emphasis is placed on Fundamental Economic Concepts, Economic Systems, Decision Making and Business Organization. Micro-economical factors like Demand, Supply, Prices and Market Structures are studied. Macro-economical factors like Employment, Labor, Wages, Government Revenue and Government Spending are important elements which will be covered.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course stresses the consolidation of previously covered concepts as well as acquisition and fluency in the use of a new language. COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This third year French course is a continuation of the first two years. The student will continue to improve listening, reading and writing skills through activities that are based on pedagogically proven methods of foreign language instruction. Throughout the five units – feelings, transportation, work, countries, and future – students build on previous knowledge with additional vocabulary, verb tenses and grammatical structures appropriate to their level. Grammar is introduced and practiced in innovative and interesting ways with a variety of learning styles in mind.

TEXTS: ‘Allez, Viens!’  Holt French Level 2

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  Students will learn the art of arguing a topic with respect. Debate terms, vocabulary and structure will be highlighted during the first semester. Included will be how to debate in a democratic society and learning the skills of analysis. Students will learn fundamental considerations when debating and actively participate in learning affirmative and negative case construction and strategy. The second semester will engage the students in real debates among their classmates.
