Special Needs Department
Dasman Model School is the premier private school in Kuwait that
provides services for students with Special Needs. Our teachers are
generalists in the area of Special Education. The fact that our
teachers are generalists in Special Education has been to our
advantage because they serve a diverse population of students with
multiple exceptionalities and varied needs.
Below is a
description of what our program looks like!
Self-Contained
Classes
The self-contained
classes deliver an individual education program to smaller groups of
students with cognitive delays. The students are grouped according to
age, social and emotional development. The Kindergarten and
Fundamentals classes focus on language acquisition and social skills.
The Enrichment classes focus on language acquisition and life-skills.
The Intermediate classes focus on an academic skills as well as
life-skills. The Pre-LSU classes mainly focus on academic skills.
Autism Class
On class is designed
to meet the needs of students with disabilities that fall somewhere on
the Autistic Spectrum. Presently, the class is composed of four
students whose age range from 12 to 18 year old.
Vocational Program
Our vocational
program was created to give an option to families of students with
exceptionalities who are not able to follow the traditional
educational program because of limitations due to their degree of
impairment. The program provides work-related learning and delivery of
the Edexcel Program of Entry Level Skills for Working Life. We
currently offer pathways in Hospitality and Catering, Sport and
Recreation, Business Administration and Retail for students.
Students considered
for placement in the Vocational Program must be sixteen years old.
Students have the opportunity to remain in the program until the age
of twenty-one.
Support
Services (Speech and Physical Therapy)
The purpose of our speech therapy program is to enhance intentional
communication via expression of ideas, obtaining desires, sharing
information and interpersonal interaction.
Oral-motor skills are also addressed within the program. Since proper
structure and function of the oral areas are necessary for speech and
sound production, intervention to improve coordination, strength,
movement and placement of the lips, tongue, jaw and cheeks (both
internally and externally) is required.
Students from
mainstream who qualify for these services should have the fees paid
for these services in advance. This applies to a limited number of
students, as priority is given to students with special needs being
provided these services first. The services may be provided for a
limited time. They are not provided yearly, unless space is available.
The purpose of our
Physical Therapy program is to provide services that help restore
function, improve mobility, relieve pain, and prevent or limit
permanent physical disabilities of students suffering from injuries or
disease. The therapist attempts to restore, maintain, and promote
overall fitness and health. |
